The name “Flustix” is a neologism and synthesis of “free of plastic”.

The Flustix-seal is the world’s first seal for plastic purity, registerd as a European Union Certification Mark by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the German Patent and Trade Mark Office. By this registration, Flustix can be considered both a certification mark as well as a legally protected word and figurative trademark.

Flustix marks three categories of plastic purity:

  • complete product
  • packaging
  • content
  • content free from microplastics

By distiguishing these three categories we allow a variety of product components to qualify for the certifcation mark. Items that reduce the use of plastic are equally qualified to apply for the seal as those which are already completely free of plastics.

Completely free from plastics

This flustix seal certifies the complete product: packaging as well as content.
The Flustix mark can be considered a milestone in consumer protection and sustainability certification: for the first time in history, producers are tested by an independant institution and assure not to market any form of synthetics towards customers.

Content free from microplastics

This Flustix-mark certifies products, namely cosmetics and sanitary articles that pass on the use of microbeads or microplastics. Generic microplastics are defined as plastic particles which are smaller than five millimeter.
While the American “Microbead Free Waters Act” prohibited the production and vending of generic microplastics in the USA since July 2017, Germany merely appealed discernment and personal responsibility to the German cosmetics industrie (“Nationalen Kosmetikdialog”). As a first-mover and pioneer in the industry, brands can hence move away from microbeads before policies obigate them to and get certified by Flustix.

Plastic-free packaging

Products of any kind that are sold in a plastic-free packaging can be marked with this certification mark. Only the packaging, not the content, is marked as free from plastics.
This also includes consumer goods, which naturally contain no plastics, or may not be included for legal reasons: Food, may use the term plastic-free, or plastic-free only for sales packaging.
Consumer goods which are naturally free of plastics or synthetics or are prohibited to contain such by law, such as food and beverages can only apply with the term “plastic-free” or “free of plastics” for their sales packaging or trays. Is your brand a first-mover in terms of sustainability? Do you already pass on plastic packaging and utilize alternative materials such as glass, wood or paper? Then you qualify for this seal.

Plastic-free product

This certificate applies for products which are plastic-free inside, but have to be packed in plastic due to sanitary reasons, such as medical appliances or similar. An example for plastic free contents if when plastic coatings in long-lasting items such as children’s toys, electronics or household goods are avoided. This is a great way of effectively reducing the synthetics in products and the number of manufacturers who pass on such coatings is consistingly growing.
If your brand manufactures products with such plastic reduction or similar, you product can be tested and apply for the seal.
