Berlin, October 2020. Around 2.8 billion single-use cups for drinks “to go” are consumed in Germany every year, 40 per cent of which are made of pure plastic (UBA 2019). Yet the supposedly more sustainable single-use paper containers are problematic too, because most of them have a plastic coating on the inside. Because of this plastic content, recycling the paper fibres is barely possible – and where it is, it is uneconomical. The sustainability initiative flustix is now awarding the seal “plastic-free product” to the Pure Paper Cups from BVO International GmbH, because the cups manage without a plastic coating and are made of paper. The packaging expert from Jettingen in Baden-Württemberg can therefore offer its business customers the first certified and verifiably plastic-free paper cups. For flustix, certifying the Pure Paper Cups also marks another important milestone in the mission to avoid plastic.

BVO International GmbH’s Pure Paper Cups – single-use cups for hot drinks, cold drinks and ice cream – are now flustix-certified and may carry the “plastic-free product” seal with immediate effect. Because the certified cups manage without plastics, they can be disposed of with waste paper and thus return to a closed loop instead of going to incineration.

Malte Biss, founder and managing director of flustix, welcomes this sustainable and consumer-friendly development in single-use products: “In our mobile society, still shaped by the pandemic, it has become even harder to do without to-go products. It is all the more pleasing to see the innovative achievement that BVO International GmbH’s paper cups manage without a plastic coating. With flustix certification of the Pure Paper Cups, companies and consumers can now more easily opt for a plastic-free and therefore more environmentally friendly to-go cup.”
