flustix certifies hemp fibre from Canadian supplier Bast Fibre Technologies

Berlin, December 2020. Since 2017 the flustix initiative has been certifying plastic-free products as well as goods containing recyclate. Alongside the many companies that rely on flustix as a quality seal for consumer products, more and more manufacturers are having their raw materials certified. With Canada’s Bast Fibre Technologies Inc. (BFTi), an international producer is now declaring its hemp fibre guaranteed free from plastic. The bast fibres made from hemp that carry the flustix seal “plastic-free product” thus serve as a sustainable basis for numerous products and applications, including cleaning wipes for the household and for personal hygiene.

“It is our declared aim to persuade as many companies as possible to rethink, and to use alternatives to plastic – for example natural raw materials – by offering independent, reliable certification that is easy to communicate,” says Malte Biss, founder of flustix. The Canadian company Bast Fibre Technologies Inc., which offers alternatives to synthetic and cellulose-based fibres, has clearly recognised this added value. Malte Biss continues: “By certifying raw material that serves as the basis for the products of many companies, we create enormous added value here. Providing demonstrably plastic-free materials makes it easier for the processing industry to keep an eye on freedom from plastic during development and production and ultimately to create a plastic-free product – which is exactly what consumers are looking for. For raw material suppliers, the certification therefore becomes a selling point.”

Alongside the flustix seal, Bast Fibre Technologies Inc. relies on further certifications confirming the safety and sustainability of its natural fibres. “The certifications underline BFTi’s commitment to supplying natural fibres that are both high in quality and genuinely sustainable,” says Jim Posa, President of BFTi. “Synthetic fibres have been the industry standard for decades. Independent certifications now give our customers the confidence to accelerate the transition to sustainable fibres.”
