Legally sound certification:
Free Claim CheckFor consumers
Not as a blanket claim, but yes with a verified figure or in relation to the product content. “Plastic-free” on its own cannot be substantiated, because traces from raw materials, recycled input and manufacturing processes cannot be ruled out entirely. Two precisely defined claims can be certified, and both stand up to scrutiny.
The Product Content Microplastic-Free trustmark carries the wording PLASTIC-FREE and confirms that no microplastic has been added to the product content. It applies to liquid and gel products and to products that function in a liquid or gel state and are water-soluble: detergents and cleaning agents, cosmetics, personal care, paints and coatings, agricultural products. Solid forms that dissolve are included as well, such as detergent tabs or solid shampoos. Testing covers intentionally added microplastic as defined by ECHA.
It does not apply to solid products such as wipes, textiles, sponges or tableware, nor to packaging. In those, plastic is not a particle in a formulation but a continuous material. LESS PLASTICS is the right programme for them.
For solid products, packaging and complete products, LESS PLASTICS applies. The trustmark states the verified value as MIN. X % PLASTIC-FREE, a figure that can be checked rather than a promise. The requirements differ by trustmark and material type; which value applies to what is set out under Which threshold applies to LESS PLASTICS?.
Since 27 September 2026, a generic environmental claim without substantiation is prohibited towards consumers. A blanket “plastic-free” on a product that contains a small share of plastic is therefore open to challenge, however small that share may be. MIN. X % PLASTIC-FREE on the trustmark is the opposite: a verified figure, backed by a published certification scheme and a licence number that can be looked up in the public database.
Two questions are enough. Is the product content liquid, gel-like or water-soluble? Then Product Content Microplastic-Free is an option. Is it a solid product or a packaging? Then LESS PLASTICS. Both together are possible, for example with a liquid cleaning agent: the content microplastic-free, the packaging under LESS PLASTICS. How a certification runs is described in the certification process.
